(November 30: St. Andrew)
Who was St. Andrew?
St. Andrew was the brother of Simon Peter and was a follower of St. John the Baptist. After the Ascension of Jesus into Heaven, he went to Asia Minor to preach the Gospel. He was crucified in Greece on a transverse cross that looked like the letter “X.”
What is the St. Andrew Christmas Novena?
My wife introduced me to the St. Andrew Christmas Novena a few years. It is called this simply because it begins on November 30, the Feast of St. Andrew the Apostle, and it extends to Christmas Eve! A novena is usually nine days, which is what novena means, but this extends beyond nine days.
The pious belief holds that whoever recites the St. Andrew Christmas novena prayer FIFTEEN times each day from the feast of St. Andrew (November 30th) until Christmas Eve will obtain the favor requested.
St. Andrew Christmas Novena
Hail and blessed be the hour and moment in which the Son of God was born Of the most pure Virgin Mary, at midnight, in Bethlehem, in the piercing cold. In that hour vouchsafe, I beseech Thee, O my God, to hear my prayer and grant my desires through the merits of Our Savior Jesus Christ, and of His blessed Mother.
Amen
It is not magic, of course. We have to make the good distinction between pious belief and superstition. If we remain connected to Christ, the Vine, then we, the branches, will remain seeking the Will of our Father in Heaven! As Jesus says:
“You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you that you should go and bear fruit and that your fruit should abide, so that whatever you ask the Father in my name, he may give it to you (John 15:16).”
Superstition would hold that as long as we are litigious about saying these words every day fifteen times, then our request will definitely happen. God may not grant us what we request if it is not for our good. Or He may want us to wait for His timing. Or He may grant it. But we are trusting in the Providence of God, the goodness and intercession of His sweet and beautiful Mother, and the glorious hope granted us through His Incarnation.
