Thank you for writing this! It bugs me every time I hear that quote with the claim it was said by St. Francis. He also didn't write the "Prayer of St. Francis," which first appeared in 1912.

At least with the Prayer, the details clearly show it was “inspired by” rather than “written by.”
But misattributions are rampant. I always make the joke when I can’t remember who said what… “well, I believe it was Mother Teresa who said…” ha!
Quite true, the details of the prayer definitely show it was inspired by St. Francis.
